Heurta had a considerable criminal record and had spent most of the prior 13 years in prison. Police were flagged down by a man who was beaten and robbed, then located and chased Heurta into the subway, off the platform and 100 yards down a dark sooty subway tunnel. He was fatally shot once at close range.
