Rutledge's other was the target of a brief police chase. One of its occupants was known and wanted. Police said they broke off the chase because of weather conditions and because of the extreme recklessness of the driver. The car topped a hill on a state highway, lost control on rain-slicked pavement, crashed into two trees, and killed Rutledge.
