About 5 a.m., deputies attempted to pull over a man believed to be involved in other burglaries. Joseph Johnson fled in his car. After a brief chase, Johnson crashed into a ditch, police said. The deputies and Johnson exchanged gunfire. Johnson was shot and killed, and one of the deputies was shot and wounded.
