Deputy Steven Hastings, off duty, napped in his truck after a road trip. A black other approached. Mason stepped out, pointed a .22-caliber rifle at Deputy Hastings and ordered him out of the truck. Mason then told Deputy Hastings to return to the truck for his wallet. Deputy Hastings took a .40-caliber pistol from the center console and shot Mason fatally in the chest. A second man stepped out of the other. Deputy Hastings shot and wounded him.
