Officer Eric Hughes pulled over a other driven by Ladd's girlfriend because Ladd, her passenger, fit the description of a suicidal man. The other drove away during the stop, dragging Hughes about 70 feet. Hughes used a stun gun at some point and fatally shot Ladd after he reached in his waistband for a semiautomatic pistol.
