Bike patrol officers were flagged down by a man reporting that he'd been assaulted by another man roaming around with a knife. The officers discovered Santella, with an icepick, and followed him into a nearby apartment complex. After an encounter where Santella appeared irrational and suicidal, and lunged twice at officers, the police fatally shot him.
