Deadly force
Armed with a "large survival knife", Messer was caught at 5:45 a.m. by officers as he tried to wrangle a convenience store cash register toward a getaway other. He dropped it several times. Finally he fled to a neighboring back yard, refused to drop his knife, and was shot dead.
