At 12:30 a.m. a local officer was speeding to support other police by laying down spike strips when he struck and killed student Douglas in his other. Criminal charges, involving whether the officer was texting and how much painkiller Tramadol was in his system, was finally resolved with a 12-month probation for the officer. A civil settlement had already been reached.
