Joel Douglas Reuter's downward spiral began with a cancer diagnosis and bipolar disorder. It ended when police were called to investigate a man--Reuter--pointing a handgun at neighbors. After a tense eight-hour standoff, Reuter fired at officers. The officers returned fire, killing him.
