J'Mauri Jysha Bumpass was stopped near the intersection of Old Oxford Highway and Meriwether Drive in the early hours of Dec. 15, 2019, by Deputy Anthony Sharp and Deputy Robert Osborne, who was a trainee at the time. He died a few hours later at Duke University Hospital of a gunshot to the head. Who placed the bullet there is disputed by police and Bumpass' family.
