According to police, officers Edward Brannick and Michael McGinnis stopped a car at about 1 a.m. because it matched descriptions of a car involved in a robbery. The officers removed Jevon Royall and another man from the car for questioning, police said. The officers shot and killed Royall, alleging that he tried to grab for an officer's gun during a pat-down. Witnesses disputed the police version of events, and forensic evidence suggested Royall wasn't shot at close range. His family sued the city, receiving a $500,000 settlement.
