Wilkes was fatally shot by police after getting into a firefight with police. Officers believe Wilkes shot and killed Charles Dean Thompson, a former Gaston County police officer. The shooting took place in someone's home. Two officers and a bystander were shot in the encounter, but sustained non-fatal injuries.
