Alex Lopez was being chased by Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies after he allegedly assaulted a deputy during a routine traffic stop. He was also reportedly under the influence of alcohol. The short pursuit ended at approximately 10:30 p.m. when Lopez crashed into Jeeves Tangonan's car, killing Tangonan.
