Elderly Thompson was injured in his other as state troopers chased a suspect, initially for having tinted windows, then for fleeing an attempted traffic stop. The suspect struck Thompson's other at high speed. Thompson died of his resulting injuries about two weeks later, one of five police chase fatalities in the county that year.
