Officers responded to a fire alarm call and through the window of the home saw James P. Hanchett watching television in his living room. Hanchett ignored their knocking and shining lights into the home and disappeared inside the house. Hanchett then opened the front door brandishing a handgun. An officer shot and killed Hanchett.
