Police say that Rodriguez threw a baseball bat at a car (possibly a rival gang) and then fired into the other with a .380 semi-automatic handgun. Roney shouted, in English, that he was a police officer and to drop the gun. Rodriguez couldn't speak English. Rodriguez didn't drop the gun. Roney fired five shots killing him.
