Deadly force

Around 5:15 p.m., officers responded to a report of suspicious activity, police said. J. Scot Alan Widmark allegedly forced a woman out of her car. Officers encountered Widmark in the street, where he brandished a large knife. The officer tried to deescalate the situation, but Widmark grabbed a male hostage who walking down the sidewalk, put him in a headlock and held the knife to his head. Multiple officers tried to talk Widmark down. After a few tense minutes with Widmark holding the hostage at knifepoint, an officer shot and killed Widmark with a rifle.
