Ismail Rafat at-Tanani
Ismail was killed in an Israeli airstrike that struck his family’s home in Beit Hanoun on May 13, 2021.
The cause of death was an Israeli aerial bombardment that targeted the at-Tanani family home in Beit Hanoun without prior warning. The missile strike instantly destroyed the residence and the surrounding square, killing Ismail, his pregnant mother, his father, and his three siblings. The attack occurred during an all-night bombardment that killed 36 Palestinians across Gaza in a single day. In Ismail’s case, the strike not only ended his short life but also obliterated his entire family, leaving no immediate survivors. His death reflects the indiscriminate and devastating nature of the May 2021 assault, in which children and families bore a disproportionate share of the losses.
Biography
Ismail Rafat at-Tanani, 7, was a young boy from Beit Hanoun, in the northern Gaza Strip. On May 13, 2021, he was killed alongside his parents and three siblings when Israeli airstrikes targeted their home without warning. The strike completely destroyed their residential block, erasing the entire family in an instant. Ismail’s death, together with that of his siblings, became one of the most heartbreaking symbols of the devastating toll on children during the May 2021 war on Gaza.
Ismail Rafat at-Tanani was born and raised in Beit Hanoun, a town in the northern Gaza Strip that has long suffered from heavy bombardments due to its proximity to the Israeli border. At just 7 years old, Ismail was in the early stages of his childhood, living with his parents, Rafat (38) and Rawiyia (36, pregnant at the time), and his three younger brothers: Ameer, 5, Adham, 4, and Mohammad, 3. On the night of May 13, 2021, during one of the deadliest waves of Israeli strikes, their family home was bombed without warning, leveling the entire square and killing everyone inside. The tragedy wiped out the entire at-Tanani family in a single moment. Ismail’s life, full of innocence and possibility, was cut short in an attack that shocked the local community and drew international condemnation. His story, like that of dozens of other children killed in May 2021, highlighted the immense suffering endured by Gaza’s youngest generation under siege and war.
