Ismail Al-Ghoul was a seasoned journalist with Al Jazeera Arabic, known for his fearless reporting from the Gaza Strip, one of the most dangerous regions for media professionals. He had dedicated years of his life to documenting the impact of Israel’s military operations on Palestinian civilians. Ismail’s journalism was rooted in a deep commitment to telling the human stories behind the headlines — the pain of displacement, the destruction of homes, the loss of life, and the daily resilience of ordinary Gazans.
Born and raised in Gaza, Ismail witnessed multiple wars, and these experiences fueled his passion for journalism. His reporting was widely respected for its empathy, accuracy, and refusal to look away from the horrors inflicted upon his people. Ismail often reported from the frontlines — hospitals, refugee camps, and bombed-out neighborhoods — sometimes minutes after attacks. He wore his press vest with pride, believing in the power of truth-telling as a form of resistance.
Colleagues described him as courageous, kind, and driven by a moral responsibility to document injustice. Pleas of Surviving Relatives and Family if any
“Ismail was a voice for the voiceless. He dedicated his life to telling the stories of those suffering in Gaza—stories the world would never have heard without him. He wore his press vest with pride, believing that being a journalist could protect him. But even that was not enough. We demand that the international community stop ignoring the killings of journalists. How many more must die before the truth is protected?”

Journalist Ismail al-Ghoul and cameraman Rami al-Rifi were reporting for Al Jazeera in the Al-Shati refugee camp, west of Gaza City, when an Israeli strike targeted their car, killing them both, on July 31. Images released by their colleague Anas al-Sharif shortly after the strike, at around 4pm, show the two reporters killed inside a white car isolated in the middle of an empty street, visibly damaged by a direct hit. Anas Al-Sharif said the two reporters had been found decapitated. They were wearing their press vests, according to information gathered by RSF. The very next day, the Israeli army claimed to have targeted Ismail al-Ghoul, accusing him of being affiliated to Hamas. An investigation by RSF into this claim showed that the evidence was insufficient and inadequate.2 rsf.org Open source
