Islam Abed was a Palestinian journalist and correspondent with Al-Quds Today TV, where she played a key role as an on-air reporter covering Israel’s war on Gaza since October 2023. She dedicated herself to amplifying the voices of Palestinians amid escalating destruction and humanitarian catastrophe. On Sunday, she was killed by Israeli forces in Gaza City, along with her husband and children, after Israeli shelling struck their residential apartment in the Rimal neighborhood. Her death highlighted the systematic targeting of Palestinian journalists and the devastating impact on families and communities in Gaza.

Islam Abed was a respected correspondent for Al-Quds Today TV, known among his colleagues and community for his courage and commitment to reporting from the front lines of Israel’s military campaign on Gaza. Like many Palestinian journalists, Abed often worked in extremely dangerous conditions with little to no protection, determined to ensure that the voices and experiences of the people of Gaza reached the world.

His work was part of a larger struggle by Palestinian journalists who faced repeated targeting, harassment, and life-threatening attacks while documenting war crimes, destruction of civilian infrastructure, and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Abed’s dedication to his profession ultimately cost him his life when an Israeli airstrike hit Gaza City. He became one of at least 249 journalists killed since the war on Gaza began, highlighting the systematic nature of attacks on media workers in the enclave.

On a Sunday in late August 2025, Israeli warplanes carried out an airstrike on Gaza City. The attack struck an area where Abed was present, fatally wounding him. Reports from the Gaza Government Media Office confirmed that Abed was one of the victims, adding his name to the growing list of journalists deliberately targeted or caught in indiscriminate bombings. His death drew condemnation from the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, which described Israel’s actions as a deliberate assault on press freedom and a war crime.
