Officers were dispatched at 6:25 a.m. to the Cobblestone Landing townhomes, after somebody called 911 to report a man with a gun. Three Lakeland officers arrived and found a man with a handgun standing with a woman, 37, in the parking lot. As the woman turned toward one of the officers, police say the man pointed his gun and fatally shot her in the abdomen. Officer Brent Behrens shot and killed Howayne T. Gayle.
