Police heard gunshots and responded to the intersection of Homan Avenue and Madison Street, police said. Officers saw a 34-year-old man, who they believed was involved in the shooting, leaving the scene. Officers began chasing the man on foot. The man, who was armed with a gun, ran to a nearby alley, and officers confronted him. He drew a gun. One of the officers shot Herbert Johnson multiple times, police said, killing him.
