Members of the Columbus Police Department's Patrol Division responded to a call on Moss Drive. During the investigation, Arreola resisted officers' efforts to place him in custody and sustained an injury, which apparently killed him. In July 2021, Columbus paid $500,000 to settle a civil lawsuit.
