Hanan Mahmoud Khdour was an 18-year-old Palestinian student from the village of Faqqu’a, located east of Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank. On April 9, 2022, while on her way to school in Jenin, she was critically wounded when Israeli soldiers opened fire on the car she was traveling in during a military incursion into the city. Hanan was struck by a live bullet in the abdomen and was rushed to Ibn Sina Specialized Hospital in Jenin. Despite intensive medical efforts, she remained in critical condition for nine days before succumbing to her injuries on April 18, 2022. Her cause of death was a gunshot wound to the abdomen, and her death occurred at Ibn Sina Specialized Hospital in Jenin. Hanan's funeral drew hundreds of mourners, and she was later buried in her hometown of Faqqu’a.

The same military operation that led to Hanan's injury also resulted in the shooting of at least ten other Palestinians and the killing of Ahmad Nasser Sa’adi, a 21-year-old man, in the Jenin refugee camp.

Hanan’s death sent shockwaves through her community. Hundreds of Palestinians attended her funeral in Jenin, mourning not only her loss but also the continuous toll the conflict exacts on the lives of young civilians. Her body was then taken to her hometown, Faqqu’a, where she was laid to rest.

Hanan Mahmoud Khdour’s name has since become a symbol of the countless young lives affected by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict—her story a poignant reminder of the human cost of military occupation and violence.
