Biography

Hamad Mustafa Hussein Abu Jilda, 24, was a young Palestinian man from the Jenin refugee camp in the northern occupied West Bank. A former political prisoner, he had spent two and a half years in Israeli custody before his death. At the time of his killing, Hamad was married and a father, with his wife expecting their second child. He came from a family deeply affected by the Israeli occupation — he was named after his uncle, who was also killed by Israeli forces in Jenin in 1992. Hamad was known in his community and remembered as part of a generation enduring continuous military aggression

On September 6, 2022, the Israeli military carried out a large-scale invasion of Jenin city and the Jenin refugee camp, deploying dozens of armored vehicles. During this incursion, Hamad was shot by Israeli forces and sustained critical injuries. He was rushed to Khalil Suleiman Governmental Hospital in Jenin, where he underwent multiple surgeries. Despite intensive medical efforts, Hamad remained in a coma in the ICU until he succumbed to his wounds five days later, on September 11, 2022. His death marked the eighth Palestinian fatality caused by Israeli fire in the West Bank in the first 11 days of that month.

Hamad’s funeral was attended by hundreds, who marched through the streets of Jenin carrying his body and calling for continued resistance. His death symbolized yet another generational loss for the Jenin refugee camp — a place that has long stood as a focal point of Palestinian resistance and resilience.
