Deadly force
Carolina Padilla called police, saying that her ex-boyfriend, Morales, was trying to break into her home for the second time. Officer Scott James responded. When he confronted Morales, Morales shot Officer James in the chest and belly with a 9mm pistol. Officer James took cover behind his patrol car and shot Morales, who was pronounced dead at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital. Officer James, who wore a bullet-resistant vest, survived his injuries.
