Smith died while being transferred from the Hobart Police Department to the Crown Point Police Department due to violent behavior. Police tried to subdue him with a taser and he died at 1:45 p.m. The Northwest Indiana Gazette reported that he was in the process of being booked. Smith's family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Sheriff John Buncich.
