Jones was struck and killed by a speeding unmarked squad car, with two officers and a 17-year-old arrestee in it, as he crossed the street with an 11-year-old relative. The 11-year-old was also seriously hurt. The officers were found to have fabricated a story about observing and chasing gunmen, a black car with gang members in it, to justify their behavior. The city settled with the family for $6.5M in 2011.
