Two officers serving a new Extreme Risk Protective Order (Red Flag Law) were dispatched to take Gary J. Willis's firearms from him. Willis met the officers at the door brandishing a handgun. Willis set the gun down while talking to the officers but became irate and picked the gun back up. One officer tried to take the gun from Willis and the gun went off. The other officer shot and killed Willis.
