Benadivez had been following a female security guard as she patrolled New Mexico Highlands University campus, police said. She called for backup and returned to the campus police station. The man allegedly pulled a gun after being confronted by a male guard near the station. The unarmed guards retreated, and state police and city police moved in and killed Benavidez.
