Edward M. Helfen was stopped by Deputy Brian Cook on suspicion of driving while drunk. When Cook walked toward the stopped car, the driver got out and was ordered to get back in until the officer was ready for him to get out. Helfen got back into the truck and then took off at a high rate of speed. Deputy Cook and Deputy Ron Harris, who had come for backup, chased him until he crashed and was killed.
