Police shot and killed Douglas Joseph Claiborne following a lengthy car pursuit, in which he fatally hit Trooper Micah May, who was trying to deploy stop sticks. Claiborne evaded several attempts for officers to deflate the tires of the sedan he was driving. Troopers stopped the car before the Spring Mountain Road and opened fire for reasons police have withheld.
