A High Point police officer saw a blue SUV, allegedly driven by Emmanuel W. Simeon, 19, going 55 mph in a 35-mph zone. The officer tried to the stop the SUV, but the driver sped off. The officer reportedly did not try to chase him. The SUV was going approximately 100 mph, when Simeon ran a red light and hit two other SUVs and a power pole before stopping. One of the SUVs allegedly hit by Simeon went down an embankment and into a nearby business parking lot. The driver of that SUV, David T. Hill, was killed. Simeon was charged with second-degree murder, three counts of felony serious injury by motor other, felony death by motor other, felony flee to elude arrest by motor other causing death, driving while impaired (alcohol), provisional impaired driving offense (under 21), driving while license revoked, speeding and failure to stop at a red light.
