An officer observed David Huffines sitting on the sidewalk. The officer walked toward the man, police said. The area was dark, and the officer asked to see the man's hands as he was speaking to him. Huffines stood up, produced a small handgun and pointed it at the officer. Mesa police said that there was an exchange of gunfire, and Huffines was killed.
