After a fight with his father, Gaines drove away from his house in a pickup truck containing a gun. He sped through Grand Junction, hitting a motorcycle and a car. He left his truck, carrying a gun, and forced a mother and her children out of their SUV. Authorities from several departments converged on Gaines. A Grand Junction officer fatally shot him.
