According to reports, officers from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources were jointly patrolling the Missouri River in response to complaints about boats operating without marker lights. At around 10:30 p.m., officers saw a boat without lights and told the operator to pull to shore. According to police, passenger Daniel Kahnk fell in the water as the boat docked. Police said they were told Kahnk could not swim, and that they searched for him without success. Someone saw Kahnk's body along the Iowa shoreline two days later and called 911. The boat's operator was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol and for not having proper lights.
This record exists so that Daniel Kahnk, and all who are named in this archive, are never reduced to a number.
