Officer John Syme said Independence and Sugar Creek police officers were pursuing a maroon sedan. Police alleged that the other stopped, and then resumed fleeing, driving in their general direction. Both men in the sedan were shot: The driver of the car, Dakota A. Lukecart, 22, died, and the other man suffered a serious, but non-life-threatening injury. Police alleged vehicular assault.
