Grayson County Sheriff Norman Chaffins and Deputy Corey Knochel responded to a scene of a domestic disturbance where a shot was fired in a residence. They were met in the driveway by Higdon. They said Higdon was advancing toward them with a firearm. Chaffins shot and killed him.
