At 1 a.m. Officer Steve Casanova approached an alleged "drug house" to investigate an assault by someone in the house. The officer did not announce himself and said "Hey what's going on?" as he attempted to push the front door open. One man in the living room stood up and asked "Who the fuck is that?!" The officer then opened fire, shooting through iron burglar bars on the front door, wounding the man who stood up and killing Charles D. "Chop Chop" Roundtree Jr. who was sitting on the sofa. Neither Roundtree nor the other man was armed. The entire incident was over in 5 seconds. Officer Casanova was cleared of wrongdoing by a grand jury. Roundtree's family has filed a civil suit that is still pending.
