Alaska State Trooper Sgt. Brent Hatch interupted a fight with Carl Tyson and another man and Tyson fled into the woods. Tyson stopped and removed an ulu, a traditional Alaskan scraping tool, from his hoodie pocket. The trooper said Tyson advanced on him with the weapon, so he shot and killed him. In a civil suit, the family contents an ulu is not a fighting implement and Tyson intended to surrender.
