According to police, officers tried to stop two 16-year-olds who were motoring recklessly near 7 Mile and Dequindre in a Jeep Cherokee that had been reported stolen two days earlier. Police said the Jeep sped off and that officers terminated the chase because it was determined to be too dangerous. The Jeep crashed into a Cadillac driven by Carl Reynolds, killing him.
