An officer and Manitowoc Fire personnel responded for an activated fire alarm. While reportedly investigating the complaint, the officer became involved in a confrontation with a man. Police said Bruce Smith first advanced on the officer with a lighter. The officer tasered him to no effect. Smith then came at the officer with a paint scraper the officer thought was a knife. The officer shot and killed Smith. Officer cleared of any wrongdoing.
