Friends reported that Hickman was angry, defiant, drunk, embarrassed about the outcome of a fight earlier that day, and said "I'm going out like a soldier." Police responded to reports of Hickman and another teen threatening construction workers, and shot Hickman dead as he charged down a narrow stairway at them with a knife.
