Less-than-lethal force
According to police, officers responded at about 8 p.m. to a report that a man was breaking up an apartment. "He was covered with blood when the officers arrived," said sheriff's Capt. Mike McCabe. Officers alleged that Custer confronted them, then went into apparent cardiac arrest as they tried to restrain him. Custer died at a hospital at about 9 p.m. Custer's family said the cause of his death was positional asphyxiation.
