Pursuit

A University of California police officer driving by a parked other heard a female passenger screaming for help, police said. When the officer approached, the male driver sped off. The pursuit began on Sixth Street north of University. Ultimately, the driver made a wide left turn onto University, where he struck and killed pedestrian Bernadette Youngbear, a local transient. The driver was later caught and charged with murder, vehicular manslaughter and gross negligence.
