At Rest

Less-than-lethal force
Police responded to Basim Maya's house after his family members called. They sought to have Maya, who was schizophrenic, involuntarily committed to a mental health facility. Maya had reportedly stopped taking his medication. According to police, officers used their hands and pepper gas to subdue Maya, but he resisted. The altercation escalated to "hand-to-hand" combat among Maya and five or six officers, police said. Maya died of asphyxia and deprivation of oxygen, according to Oakland County Medical Examiner L.J. Dragovic.
