Asra Tavousi-Nia was injured during anti-government protests in western Iran. During demonstrations in the Sonqor area, security forces reportedly opened fire with live ammunition toward protesters. Asra was struck by a bullet during the crackdown.
Asra Tavousi-Nia was shot with live ammunition in the pelvic/hip area by Iranian security forces during protests on 8 January 2026. The injury caused severe internal damage and heavy bleeding. She was taken to Taleghani Hospital, where she fell into a coma. After spending about two weeks hospitalized with serious injuries and reportedly limited medical resources, she died on 24 January 2026.
Biography
Asra Tavousi-Nia was a 14-year-old Kurdish student from Dasht Bolagh village in Sonqor and Kolyaei County, Kermanshah Province. Known as an outstanding student at Setaregan School, she was described by those who knew her as bright and dedicated to her studies. On 8 January 2026, during protests in the region, she was struck by a live bullet fired by security forces, causing severe injuries that left her in a coma. After two weeks of hospitalization at Taleghani Hospital in Kermanshah, she died on 24 January 2026. Her death became one of the reported cases of young victims during the protest crackdown.
Asra Tavousi-Nia was born into a Kurdish family and lived in the village of Dasht Bolagh in Sonqor and Kolyaei County, in western Iran. She was the daughter of Mehdi Tavousi-Nia and was recognized among teachers and classmates as a talented and hardworking student at Setaregan School.
On the evening of 8 January 2026, protests were taking place in the Sonqor area as part of wider demonstrations across Iran. During the unrest, Iranian military-security forces reportedly fired live ammunition toward demonstrators. Asra was struck by a bullet in the hip/pelvic region, causing catastrophic injuries. She was transferred to Taleghani Hospital in Kermanshah where she fell into a coma.
For approximately two weeks she remained hospitalized, but due to the severity of the injuries and reportedly limited medical resources, she did not recover. She died on 24 January 2026, only months before her fifteenth birthday. Human rights organizations later documented her case as one of the young victims killed during the protest crackdown.
