Costello fled from a traffic stop and started a police pursuit back and forth across the NJ state line. Warwick officers and a state trooper stopped Costello with a spike strip then smashed out a car window to extract him. At that point Costello's car lurched back and forth, wounding several officers, and he was shot to death.
