Off-duty reserve Deputy Jose Castillo and his girlfriend went to Buffalo Fred's, where Erevia and his girlfriend were also patrons. Their girlfriends were involved in a fight. All four were made to leave the bar. They went to the parking lot, where Deputy Castillo shot Erevia in the back, belly and arms, killing him. Erevia was unarmed. Deputy Castillo was fired and convicted of murder.
