Amira died on May 14, 2021, when Israeli warplanes targeted an agricultural land near her family’s 3-story home in Beit Lahia, Gaza. The missile struck the house where she, her mother Lamia, and two brothers were sitting together, completely destroying the building. The attack was part of a large-scale Israeli offensive on Gaza, which involved 160 warplanes, artillery, and gunboats striking 150 targets with 450 missiles and shells within 40 minutes. Amira’s death was a direct result of the missile impact that leveled her home.
Biography
Amira Hasan Mohammad Attar was a 7-year-old Palestinian girl from Beit Lahia in the Gaza Strip. She lived with her parents, Lamia’ Hasan al-‘Attar and Mohammed al-Attar, and her siblings Islam and Mohammed “Zain al-Dein.” In May 2021, she had just been enrolled in the first grade and was excited about starting school and shopping for school supplies. Her life, along with that of her mother and two brothers, was tragically cut short by an Israeli missile strike that completely destroyed their home during a large-scale attack on Beit Lahia on May 14, 2021.
Amira Hasan Mohammad Attar (b. 2014 – d. May 14, 2021) was one of four children in the Attar family. Her father, Mohammed al-Attar, recounted that Amira had been preparing to start school, full of excitement about learning and spending time with her older brother, Islam. On May 14, 2021, Israeli warplanes targeted their neighborhood in Beit Lahia with multiple missile strikes. The family’s home, along with nearby buildings, was completely destroyed. Amira, her mother Lamia’ (27), and her brothers Islam (8) and Mohammed “Zain al-Dein” (8 months) were killed while sitting together in their house. Amira’s father survived with minor injuries, left to mourn the loss of his wife and three children. Amira was among 44 Palestinians killed in Gaza on that day and was one of 247 Palestinians killed during the 11-day Israeli assault between May 10–21, 2021, including 66 children.
